MAC describes their May 2010 Summer collection as, “The seaside has a kind of golden, sexy alchemy we’re all drawn to. This collection encapsulates it with the most soothing, sultry shades of summertime. A safe way to bronze, beautify, and get colour that looks sun-kissed. Close your eyes, and go To The Beach!” I describe it as, “1970s packaging minus the shag rug and door beads…still fun yet should have been more fun.”
I anticipated the release of this collection mostly due to the product packaging. I caught a glimpse of the collection on Temptalia.com before the release date in the United States. Only a few items stuck out to me as absolute most haves like the “Sweet & Punchy” veluxe pearl eyeshadow, “Thrills” frost lipstick and the lipglasses in “Flurry of Fun” and “Splashing”. I was on the fence with the “Float on By” eye kohl (having just spent over $200 on Make Up Forever’s Aqua Eyes Collector Set. However, as usual, for me, it is hard to resist MAC. If MAC were my lover it would be a mentally abusive arrangement…manipulative but pleasant…yea, it’s possible and wretched yet satisfying.
My disappointments with this collection are the large number of permanent items within it and the color pay off of Sand & Sun eyeshadow. Sand & Sun veluxe pearl eyeshadow has a horrible color pay off on my NC44 to NC45 skin shade. You can see for yourself in the images attached to this article. If you are my shade or darker, save your money. Do not buy this eyeshadow unless you love building color until you get carpal tunnel syndrome. There are comparable colors to Sand & Sun with greater color pay off in MAC’s permanent line and from other brands.
Overall, I am delighted with the Refined Golden bronzing powder. This will be a spring and summer staple for me. My finger could not get enough “swatching” of “Sweet & Punchy” veluxe pearl eyeshadow. I am debating whether or not to purchase a back up. Since coral will be a popular color this spring and summer I am currently in love with “Flurry of Fun” lipglass and “Thrills” lipstick. They will go very well together.
