When I looked at the date of my last post, June 29, 2010 I realized that I’m really behind in posting. I’ve been shopping and have a few hauls to post. This first haul is an E.L.F. (EyesLipsFace.com) haul from their 60% off the entire website sale.
First I have to say that I am disappointed in the shipping speed, I placed my order on July 6, 2010 and it did not ship out until July 13, 2010. I received my order on July 16, 2010. Even though their shipping has improved since well over a year ago when the shipping time frame was around twenty days or more, I expected faster shipping.
Also, two items were missing from my order. The “Cool Coral” mineral lipstick and the “Bubble Gum Pink” nail polish. One item I ordered, their luscious liquid lipstick in “Strawberry” was out of stock. This repeated the history from my last order in April 2010 where an item was missing, a mascara. From these experiences I have learned when you order from E.L.F. you need to check your invoice and compare it to the products received.
Since this haul is moderately sized I will break this haul into three parts. This first part will cover three of the nine nail polishes, five lipsticks and the one luscious liquid lipstick I received.
E.L.F. NAIL POLISH- “Chocolate”
Making note of the 60% of $1 nail polishes I decided to rack up on dark colors for Fall. When I ordered, their new popular summer colors were either out of stock or not yet released. “Chocolate” is simply divine. I am partial to dark nail polishes as I feel it compliments my MAC NC45 skin tone. Side Note: I rarely use MAC foundation. I still have a nice size Prescriptives Antelope foundation stash. NC45 is a point of reference for the masses. Additionally, I find dark nail polish mysterious. When I see dark painted fingers I begin to wonder about the wearer. I wonder if they are goth, depressed, sex craved, etc. It is odd how colors can say so much or so little about a person. Anyway, back to “Chocolate”. “Chocolate” is not riveting or vibrate, it just is and that is all is has to be really. My expectation of its name in comparison to the color was on point. I would repurchase this color.
E.L.F. NAIL POLISH- “Mod Mauve”
“Mod Mauve” is a mousy color. It lies in between vibrant and lack luster. I view it as a color for those which allow their 9 to 5 personas spilage into their 5 to 9 personas; in other words…the 24/7 conservatives. Maybe ultra conservatives would feel there is a bit of expressed “danger” in “Mod Mauve” which may cause them to seek out a light taupe.
E.L.F. NAIL POLISH- “Dark Navy”
“Dark Navy” looks better in the bottle. When I saw the delightful sparkles in the container I was more than excited to stroke its brush onto my nails…was I ever disappointed. After the second coat I had to hold my fingers up to light to capture a glint of Navy. The bulk of this color is a mousy black. Yes, I love the word mousy. I find it seemingly descriptive.
Lippies Onward! E.L.F. mineral lipsticks are popular for their glide on creamy feel and their no parabens, no preservatives and no dyes ingredients. These lipsticks do stack up to the drugstore and department store brands I have purchased over the years. Through my purchase I wanted to find a lovable, need to have or “mesmerize me” shade like MAC’s “Violetta” that I would definitely repurchase and brag about to others. Maybe I was far reaching. Nevertheless, E.L.F. is past due in creating more lip shades in this fabulous formula of mineral lipstick.
E.L.F. MINERAL LIPSTICK- “Bare Brown”
It is perfect for my nearly natural looks or lazy, no make up running out the door quick errands. It is a definite repurchase because of my skin tone and how well it covers my naturally pink lips to bring them into the color spectrum of my skin color.
E.L.F. MINERAL LIPSTICK- “Pouty Petal”
Eh…not so much…E.L.F.’s” “Pouty Petal” is the exact color of my before mentioned, naturally, pink lips. For me, it works to even out the pinkness to camouflage my natural brown lip line but not enough to make me want to slap down $5 to repurchase with or without a discount. “Pouty Petal” would look fabulous on skin tones lighter than NC45 without the need of mixing.
E.L.F. MINERAL LIPSTICK- “Prime Plum”
“Prime Plum” reminded me of somebody’s Mama’s lipstick. I will elaborate. Nearly every woman of color I knew growing up owned this same shade of brownish red lipstick. They would dig it out of their purse to freshen up the already dead color on their lips before church service or after dinner. I say, “somebody’s Mama’s lipstick” because my Mama wore “I’m not a hooker.” red lipstick. You know, that lipstick that was not bright red but a shade or two lighter than that hooker red. Side Note: I don’t know when, how or from where I began associating bright red lipstick to hookers. I am sure it is something I heard or saw during my childhood that crept into my brain and stayed there planting seeds of bias. Since somebody’s Mama’s lipstick I declared as a child to be an old and dead color, I would not repurchase “Prime Plum”.
E.L.F. MINERAL LIPSTICK- “Ripe Rose”
Now that you are familiar with “I’m not a hooker red,” “Ripe Rose” is it. This is the color my Mama wore to church, special occasions, and to work. I like it but it is not for me. I do not know if I mentioned this before but I am partial to light colors on my lips and dark colors on my nails. There is nothing stunning about it. It is a color that almost all make up collections have on ready.
E.L.F. MINERAL LIPSTICK- “Runway Pink”
I purchased this color thinking it may be a possible MAC Viva Glam “Gaga” lipstick dupe for in case the Gaga lipstick sold out and I wanted a back up. The Gaga lipstick is a slightly brighter and warmer shade of pink. Despite the failed dupe, “Runway Pink” is a fabulous cool pink color for a lighter skin tones on me I looked ashy. Side Note: MAC AIDS Fund is a fabulous charity where 100% of the profits go toward people affected with HIV and AIDS. My attempt to look for a dupe was only in case “Gaga” sold out and I ran out of my current “Gaga” lippie. If you have the money, buy the real thing and support the cause. More information about MAC’s fund is here: http://www.macaidsfund.org/.
E.L.F. LUSCIOUS LIQUID LIPSTICK- “Perfect Pink”
From the products I’ve reviewed this far, “Perfect Pink” is absolutely the most enjoyed. The color is ravishing, glossy and pigmented. It is not sticky. I can open and close my lips without the top sticking to the bottom which creates feathering. This liquid lipstick is also jam packed with a minty smell. If you are not a fan of mint, this lippie is not for you.
As usual, these opinions are mine and are not meant to influence your purchase or lack there of. I hope my swatches at least help you to view the color as it appears on NC43 to NC45 skin tone if you can get past grubby fingers that are in need of a manicure. Part 2 of 3 to be published later this week. Enjoy!
